Your Go-To Haven for Premium Freshwater Shrimp
Coming soon: Your new favorite little freshwater shrimp shop!
The best freshwater shrimp for beginners are Neocaridina (Cherry Shrimp) and Amano Shrimp. They are highly resilient, actively clean the tank, and are forgiving of minor beginner mistakes. Starting with a group of at least 10 in a 10-gallon, heavily planted aquarium guarantees the best results.
Essential Tank Setup & Care Rules
Tank Size: Start with a 10-gallon tank. Smaller tanks (like 5 gallons) are cute, but water parameters fluctuate too rapidly, which can be fatal to delicate shrimp.
Filtration:
Always use a gentle sponge filter. Hang-on-back filters have strong intakes that can suck up and kill tiny baby shrimp.
Water Parameters:
Temperature: 64°F - 78°F (17°C - 25°C).
pH: 6.5 - 7.6.
Note: Consistency is more important than hitting exact numbers. Avoid sudden temperature and pH swings
Plants and Hiding Spots:
Shrimp absolutely love moss (like Java Moss) and floating plants. These provide essential cover and allow them to graze on natural biofilm (the slimy texture that builds up on surfaces)
Feeding:
Shrimp require very little food, but they need variety. Feed them sinking algae wafers, shrimp-specific pellets, or blanched vegetables (like zucchini or spinach) only a couple of times a week
Tank Mates:
Keep them with other peaceful, nano-sized fish, or better yet, keep a shrimp-only tank! Most fish will stress shrimp out or try to eat the tiny babies.
